Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About WNSALT
-
Does SALT have a membership fee?
We used to charge a membership fee to cover our base expenses, but in order to simplify our website, we had to abandon that concept. We now ask that all participants consider giving a donation each semester to help us pay for insurance, business licenses, website hosting, van maintenance, etc.
-
How old do I have to be to participate?
SALT gears activities and classes for people 50 years of age and older, but we allow anyone over 21 to participate.
-
How do I sign up for an excursion and when will I receive details about the trip?
Click on "Browse Events" and then select the trips you want, add them to your cart, then click on the image of the cart in the upper right hand corner of your screen. When you pay, you will receive notification of the clubs, classes, and excursions you have chosen. 3-4 days before the date of the excursion, you will receive an email giving you even more details about the trip than those that appear under the individual descriptions on our website. We always depart from the Kohl's parking lot at the intersection of 544 and 17 Bypass, but depending on the direction of travel, we may include another stop. If there is more than one pick-up location, you will be asked in the email to tell us which you prefer.

Each excursion lists an activity level. What do these numbers mean?
Level 1: Easy—You are a leisurely traveler who can maintain a minimal level of physical activity. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a van or other means of transportation without assistance, and you can walk unassisted on even surfaces at a leisurely pace for 30-60 minutes without difficulty. You can also stand during tours for at least 30 minutes.
Level 2: Moderate—You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking up to 1-2 miles over the course of a day or standing for 30 minutes is no problem for you. You can handle a variety of terrains to moderate hills with ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease.
Level 3: Active—You are an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (1-2 hours) isn’t a big deal. Hills and uneven surfaces are no problem for you. Walking 2-3 miles during the course of a day is very doable as well as climbing into and out of various modes of transportation. You can climb three flights of stairs easily. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistant devices.
Level 4: Challenging—You are ready to seize the day, no matter what it may bring. You lead an active life at home. Walking and hiking are things you enjoy; over 7,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walks and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain and standing for long periods of time. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistant devices.
The activity level for SALTY Selects is 5. This means that you have a high fitness level, expect a vigorous pace, and enjoy participating in five to seven hours of physical activity a day, pushing yourself to your physical limit. You should be able to board the van without difficulty. In addition to physical fitness, you should have a strong level of preparedness to handle adverse weather conditions, long periods of travel, and changes in the itinerary. Since we often stay in VRBOs as well as hotels, you should be able to navigate stairs with your luggage and expect to share living space with others. (Note: we assign singles to rooms with separate beds.) Luggage on these trips is limited to one carry-on bag (which you can check at your own expense), a backpack, and a purse. All travelers must be able to transport their luggage into and out of the van, and into and out of our lodging without assistance. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistant devices.
-
Can I drive myself if I want to join a SALT trip?
Yes, you can drive yourself. Just let us know that you are doing so when you register. Also, if you need a walker or wheelchair, we ask that you drive separately since we do not have room for this equipment in the van.
-
Can I get a refund if I find I cannot go on a trip or attend a class?
Not unless you notify us and find someone to take your place.
-
How do I register for classes and clubs, and how will I be notified about the time, place, or Zoom link?
Click on “Browse Events.” SALT offerings will then appear in chronological order from their start date. Click on each one to read the full description and to add them to your cart. Once you have added all the courses and clubs you want, go to your cart and pay, and you will receive a receipt that lists every event in which you are enrolled. You will either receive an email before the event from your club leader or a link to the online class from us (usually a day before for the latter). Be sure to check your spam folder in case your computer’s filter is super sensitive. You may not receive a reminder for in-person classes, so keep good records of the meeting times and places. If there is a materials fee for the class, in addition to the fee for the class, that will be payable directly to the instructor on the first day of class.
-
Can I buy more than one seat in a class or a trip?
No. Each person must register separately so that we have accurate numbers and contact information for each person.
-
If SALT cancels a class or a trip, do I get a refund?
Yes, though it may take 7-10 days to show up on your credit card.
-
Can I buy a gift certificate from SALT for a friend?
Of course! Just contact us at wnsalt22@gmail.com
